Working with the Amelia Island Professional Engineer, the Army Corps of Engineers scientists and Dare County officials I analyzed the Currituck engineering data from three years of studies to develop design beach requirements for a successful tourism beach. I compared this with the risk situation identified by the County’s contractor. I couple this with the County’s tax database to identify what is the economic risk to the County from beach nourishment, how much it might cost to restore property protection and tourism competitive beach characteristics for the few miles of highest near term risk. I also discuss a financing plan that would allow beach protection to be added, a couple miles year, to assure protection for years to come. The protection itself, and the security of knowing that the County has taken responsibility will assure interested parties that Corolla property is worthy of investment which will raise property values and tax revenues.
